Botulinum Toxin Injections
Botulinum toxin Type A is a purified neurotoxin derived from the bacterium clostridium botulinum. In aesthetic medicine, it is commonly used under in the form of Botox®, a well-established treatment for reducing dynamic facial lines.
It works by temporarily relaxing specific muscles through blocking nerve signals, helping to soften the appearance of wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions. When administered in controlled, medical doses by a trained professional, botulinum toxin Type A is considered a safe and effective treatment. The effect is localized and reversible. Over time, nerve endings regenerate and normal muscle activity gradually returns.
Botulinum toxin injections are not a ‘one size fits all’ and therefore as with any treatment – a full consultation is required beforehand.
What is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum toxin type A is a purified protein derived from Clostridium botulinum. In aesthetic medicine, it is widely used to temporarily relax targeted muscles, helping to soften dynamic lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial movement. It is also used in medical settings to treat conditions such as excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), teeth grinding, and certain muscle disorders.
How Does It Work?
Botulinum toxin works by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. This prevents the nerve from signalling the muscle to contract, leading to a temporary relaxation of the treated muscle. In the case of hyperhidrosis, it blocks the stimulation of sweat glands, reducing sweat production in the treated area.
How Is the Treatment Performed?
Treatment involves a series of small, precise injections into specific muscles or areas of concern using a very fine needle. The procedure is quick—typically 10–20 minutes—and requires no downtime for most patients. A personalised assessment is carried out beforehand to ensure treatment is tailored to your facial anatomy and desired outcome.
Treatment Protocols & Results
Dosing and injection points vary depending on the treatment area, muscle strength, and individual goals. Results typically begin to appear within 3–5 days, with full effect seen at around 10–14 days. The effects generally last 3–4 months, after which muscle activity gradually returns and repeat treatment may be required to maintain results.
Possible Side Effects
Botulinum toxin is generally well tolerated when administered by a qualified practitioner. Common side effects are mild and temporary, and may include:
• Redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site
• Mild headache
• Temporary asymmetry or slight drooping of nearby muscles
Rare complications can occur if the toxin spreads beyond the intended area, which is why treatment should always be carried out by an experienced medical professional.
